Resume:

Jan 2016 – Present, HUMPHREYS & PARTNERS ARCHITECTS, EDMONTON, AB
Position: Project Architect & Contract Administrator
General Roles & Responsibilities: Director of Edmonton Office & Contract Administration.

Projects:

Mayfair Tower North, Edmonton AB – Project Architect & Contract Administration.
The Mayfair is very large mixed-use commercial/residential building located right into the downtown of Edmonton (the project budget was about $68,000,000.00). With two levels of parkade parking, a main floor commercial level, rooftop gardens, and over 230 various suite types up to ten stories in height, the Project presented many complexities to the builder and consultants alike. Technological features included a solar array on the roof, and also a large cogeneration system that produces energy and heat that is reabsorbed back into the building’s heating systems.  Naturally, a large and complex project like this required a lot of overview and attention and I was there to ensure the details were carried out, improvise solutions as needed, and manage the contract through a long list change orders, RFI’s and the like.

2011-2015 Hartwig Architecture
Position: Architect
General Roles & Responsibilities: Project Management and Design

Projects:

Station Pointe Greens, Edmonton AB- Design Architect
This is a large mixed-use city block sized development that comprises apartments, townhouses and commercial spaces. Unique to the project is a range of social and ecological goals that are intended to promote a very broad concept of urban sustainability. The entire project is to be built upon “Passive House” principles that achieve energy efficiency through a superior building envelope. Also, it represents the first residential project in Edmonton to include a waste water centre responsible for the recycling of black water for reuse toward toilets, landscape irrigation, and car washing. In addition to these ecological goals, the project includes a range of social groups; housing for seniors, artists, students, and the physically disabled.

The Corners 1 & 2, Edmonton - Design Architect
This is large twin tower and podium complex on two sites over the 5 Corners area of Edmonton’s downtown. At 41 and 35 stories, both presented a block - busting collection of unit types, penthouses, podium suites, retail space and multi- level parkades. I did a lot of the design, and coordinating on this job which kept me busy for some time.

the Edmontonian Tower, Edmonton AB - Design Architect
At 70 stories, the Edmontonian is poised to become the tallest tower in Western Canada, and a literal highlight in the Portfolio of Hartwig Architecture. Part condominiums, part hotel, part conference and office space, with a large robotic automated parking system  thrown in - it plugs-in a lot of new program toward the future growth and vitality of the down town.

Capital Power Wind Farm - O&M Building, Tumbler Ridge, BC - Project/Design Architect
This is the maintenance building for a large wind farm in British Columbia. Essentially it is an office and shop combination, that fits in well with rugged industrial character of Tumbler Ridge. Nothing pretentious, just architecture that suits it’s time, place and function.

Custom Environmental, Recycling Facility - Project Architect
This is a new recycling facility for Custom Environmental, a company that specializes in the  controlled disposal  and recycling of numerous industrial products including paints, aerosols, lamps, transformers, batteries, and other products. Moving process operations from Ontario to Alberta, the company chose to dismantle their Ontario building and reuse parts of it in this new facility - thus extending their practical philosophy into the new building.

Shell Engineering & Instrumentation Building, Fort Saskatchewan AB - Consultant
Completed through a design-build contract with Bird Construction, the architectural role on this project was mainly to review and revise the design with the builders and engineers.

Other Work:
- Metis Senior Housing, 7 storey mixed use residential, Edmonton - Designer
- Modular Houses, Edmonton - Designer
- Sherwood Park Care Centre, Kitchen Addition - Project Architect.

2008-2010 Bennett Architect, Edmonton
Position: Intern Architect
General Roles & Responsibilities: Primarily as a Designer, but also as Project Architect on some projects, see below.

Projects:

ATCO Gas, North Edmonton Operations Centre - Project Architect & Designer.
This 5000 square metre, $15 million dollar industrial building for ATCO Gas provides a service base to the North Edmonton region and includes offices, training rooms, garage facilities, and a large site of fleet vehicles. It was completed through a design-build contract with Clark Builders. I acted as the prime design consultant, coordinating architectural, electrical, mechanical, and structural from the beginning of design toward final construction of the facility.

ATCO Electric, Stettler Distribution Building, Stettler AB - Designer.
Planned to consolidate all of ATCO Electric’s holdings within the town of Stettler, this 3500 square metre, $11 million dollar facility included offices, work shops, garage facilities and site storage. I took the project through to successful completion of schematic design, but progress stalled shortly afterward due to delayed action from ATCO.

Zama Community Centre, Zama City AB - Project Architect & Designer.
This was a new community centre for the small remote town of Zama City in Northern Alberta, which included a library, multi- purpose rooms, various government and business offices. Primarily, I designed and coordinated this project from its beginning toward completion of the tender documents.

U of A - School of Public Health, Edmonton AB - Project Architect & Designer.
Essentially an office renovation, this project was undertaken to provide a temporary home for the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta.  The design encompassed a complete renovation to the third floor of the University Terrace Building, neatly arranging the School’s various administrative, faculty and student needs into one big collective solution.

U of A - Hub Mall Skylight Competition, Edmonton AB - Designer
The University of Alberta held a design-build competition for replacing the skylights at its famous Hub Mall. Towards this, Bennett Architect teamed up with Jen Col Construction and prepared a bid package, to which I contributed the design and presentation of the proposed skylight. Despite having won the ‘design component’ of this competition and coming in under budget, we unfortunately lost to a lower bid.

Other Work:
- Apartment renovation - Lendrum Villa, Capital Region Housing Corp. Edmonton, AB
- County office renovation - County of Grande Prairie, AB
- Master plan - Leduc Operations Facility, City of Leduc, AB

2007 – 2008, 007 Architecture, Edmonton
Position: Intern Architect
General Roles & Responsibilities: Design, Project Management, Production Manager

Projects:

CWB Bank, Leduc and Sherwood Park branches - Project Architect & Designer
Due to my past experience with Canadian Western Bank (see below), they hired 007 Architecture to develop a new design concept for its local service branches, and it was my job to invent and develop this into two new bank buildings, one in Leduc AB, the other in Sherwood Park AB. Due to the small size of this office at the time, I had the opportunity to do all the design and most of the construction documents. The results still look impressive a few years afterward, and the users tell me they love the space.

Other Work:
- Facility Report - Black Gold Centre (now the Leduc Recreation Centre), Leduc, AB
- Skylight replacement design - Vincent J. Maloney Catholic Junior High, St Albert, AB
- Developed and maintained production system and drafting standards manual for the 007 Office.

2006 – 2007 N53 Architecture, Edmonton
Position: Intern Architect
General Roles & Responsibilities: Design

Projects:

CWB Bank, Sherwood Park AB - Designer
This was a Bank design, originally intended to develop a new standard for the local branches of Canadian Western Bank. I completed schematic design at N53, however the final product was realized with 007 Architecture (due to the partners of N53 splitting up with one of them forming the new 007 practice).

Other Work:
- Shivam Commercial Development design, Sherwood Park, AB
- Facility Reports - CWB Branches in Edmonton, Red Deer, Saskatoon.
- Facility Report and Renovation Study - St. Albert Catholic High School, St Albert, AB
- Portable Additions design - Leduc Estates School, Leduc, AB\- Interior Renovation design - Ecole Bellevue School, Beaumont, AB

2004 – 2006 Grant + Sinclair Architects, Vancouver
Position: Architectural Graduate
General Roles & Responsibilities: Assistant Design

Projects:

Westview Elementary School, Vancouver BC - Assistant Designer
This was a new elementary school for North Vancouver. I mainly contributed to the schematic design, developing its formal aspects, such as its unique roof profile. Now completed, the school makes a lively addition to the neighbourhood, visually exuding the energy of the children it serves.

Hazelgrove Elementary School, Surrey BC - Assistant Designer
Similarly to the Westview school (above) this was another fun and playful building, to which I explored and developed many of its formal elements.
